Rakrakan TM ® Philippines music zine and concerts by Gerry Diwa. Pinoy rock. Original Pilipino Music. Since 1995.
Gerry DFebruary of 1993, the College of Fine Arts of UP Diliman is getting ready for their annual F.A. Concert when AGNUS DAY was formed at the last minute just to be able to perform at the said concert. Formed by brothers Joel and Voltaire Bohol (guitars and vocals respectively), AGNUS DAY embarked on their first gig where they first learned of tuned guitars and the rowdy rock audience. After this embarrassing moment, it was back to the drawing board for them. The newgameplan, more practice. Agnus Day The Fine Arts Concert was to be followed by more campus concerts and a lot of practice which proved to be worth everything when they passed auditions for a live music club. Immediately thereafter, though, their drummer left due to other priorities, a second drummer who filled in proved too much into the heavy side for them. It was not until a third drummer in the person of Emman Mendoza that AGNUS DAY, now including Gredge Salvador on bass, was completed. AGNUS DAY’S music can be defined as not too rough and not to smooth, more of the new wave and new rock stuff. Musical influences include The Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Sugar, The Beatles and The Carpenters. Locally, they have high regard for talented bands like The Dawn, Identity Crisis, Violent Playground and the Eraserheads. Their songs include “Pulisdog” aimed at corrupt policemen, the anti-violence “Mababaw na Isipan, “Boy in the River” tells of a young man’s ordeals of growing-up, the time travel suggestive “Anxieties” and the angst filled “Verge”. For them, messages are as important as the melody and harmony of a particular song, it gives them a sense of fulfillment, being able to deliver and express what they feel about certain facts of life. At a time when the band thing is experiencing a boom, the Agnus babies feel that it’s about time to unite. Forget all about discrimination crap so peace and harmony can finally reign in our galaxy.
