Queso: Ang pagbabalik ng daga

Cheese decided to change their band name to its Tagalog term, Queso (keso/ quezo/quez-o/kes-o) you decide how to spell. And along with a self-title album — Queso.

Yup, these guys are lazy “Sampung taon na kaming magkakabanda at sa sobrang tamad namin nasa pangatlong album palang kami.”

But, I like bands that take long periods of time to come up with a new album. “Hindi nagmamadali at nagiging solido ang tugtugan at tunog.” Especially for Queso, with their mix of new metal, tropical and jazz music, their music was refined in this album.

The Queso album is composed of the following songs:

• Balana
• Gila-E ‘Te
• Billy Boy
• Unyo
• Manila Ice
• Sta. Maria
• Wara
• Inkdah

Ian Tayao did a great job putting the mouth on to the songs. I personally like Ian-Lourd match-up on Track 7 Billy Boy. And the slow-dark-jazzy grove on Billy Boy was great.

Another track I like was Track 1 Insekta, “MOKHAMIYASAYMOKAMEH,” I don’t know the meaning of the word but, it was cool. Insekta is on the World Battle of the Bands 2006 CD, and I voted for Queso for it.

Doing the new metal sound and mixing it with a low-jazz grove made Queso evolve as artists. Hearing the album, they have made their sound so distinct. They still have the Cheesy “taste” on the rest of the album but, more complex, artistic as I may say.

Wala ako masabi sa album na ito. One word “ASTIG.”
