[…] Back to the CD. Listening to Firebottle’s “Kalbaryo” and “Di Na Lang Sana” sealed my long-time suspicion that blues remained alive and well in the Philippines. Finally, blues music that we can call our very own. […]

Firebottle is a new band composed of old-timers or should we say young veterans of the Metro’s live music scene. Anchored by DeltaSlim on vocals and guitars, Firebottle includes Bitoy on drums, Erick on bass, Nathan on guitar, Roneil on keyboards and on their live sets also Kakoi on guitars and blues harp (harmonica).
Firebottle is a blues-influenced band that also draws heavily from black gospel, soul, rock, jazz, and local music such as Pinoy rock and kundiman. The band’s approach to live playing as a jam band uses simple and catchy tunes as platform for expression and improvisation.
In every band performance, it is apparent that Firebottle aims to communicate the message and emotion of the song and touch the soul of the audience. We caught Firebottle performing their blues based songs live at the BLUESKRIEG CD launch party.
Bakit Nagkaganito is a classic 8-bar blues tune in the tradition of Freddie King but with Pinoy rock-styled lyrics. The song features a homegrown story of lost youth, dashed hopes, and the vagaries* of life.
Kalbaryo is a riff-based, 12-bar blues-rock song about the desperation of a 3rd world society born into poverty and fighting an uphill battle for survival.
Enjoy the videos. Better yet, buy the Blueskrieg CD coz one of Firebottle’s tunes there is a MUST LISTEN - it’s the blues, it has soul, it will give you the goosebumps, promise!

*vagaries an unpredictable or erratic action, occurrence, course, or instance: the vagaries of weather; the vagaries of the economic scene.
